Apple Oak Fibre Works Sage Kit Review

Apple Oak Fibre Works Sage Kit Review

Following the success of my Apple Oak Fibre Works Elderberry kit, I tried the sage next. I’m going to say it’s because it only has one modifier, but really because I thought it would smell incredible.

It definitely did. One of the worst things about natural dye is it smells so good, but there’s no eating payoff. Seriously, it smelled like the best roast chicken I’ve never made.

The only thing you need to get for this kit is yarn or fabric. I used three skeins of their Turin base in white which is a wool/silk/ramie fingering weight.

This is definitely one of their easiest kits. I chose to hot mordant my three skeins, then made the dye from the sage, then modified one skein in iron. I did my second dip skein as a variegated half and half deal.

I’ve read that iron can make yarn brittle, and between that and going a bit too hard on the hot mordant I think I got a tad bit of felting. Nothing too extreme- the yarn is still 100% useable, but I definitely think I’ll be cold mordanting next time.

Actually, that’s a lie. Cold mordanting takes 24 hours and I’m bad at planning. But I’ll definitely think about it next time and kick myself while remembering this moment.

I’m so happy that I found Apple Oak Fibre Works because I love their kits and their ethics- everything is plastic-free and they save rainwater and they compost. I can’t wait for my next dye kit!

You can get the kit here!

I’ve also made a video documenting the experience.
