Hey there!

My name’s Sandy Salierno and I love making clothes!

Is This the Cutest Baby Set I've Made?

Before we get into anything, let me clearly state: I am not pregnant, this is a gift for a friend.

I make a lot of baby gifts. I guess I’m just at that age and honestly, it’s not the worst. Baby stuff knits up quickly and tends to be exceedingly adorable. It also means I’ve become a bit of a girl in the know regarding baby patterns. I can always spot when something new is on the market. I had never heard of Yarnsmith’s before, but when I saw this pattern for the Taylor Cardigan I knew I wanted to make it.

I think Yarnsmith’s might be a British brand and I had never heard of them. They obviously suggest their own yarn but I had some Wendy with Wool DK in my stash so I cast on with that.

All up this was an incredibly easy pattern to knit. The instructions were clear and the finished result is simply adorable. The colour is a bit deeper than it’s showing up on camera and it has a slightly soft white halo. Absolutely perfect for this time of year.

If I had one small nit-picky gripe it’s that this pattern doesn’t have age sizes, only measurements. I live away from all my friends so I’m not seeing these babies in person and, quite frankly, I have no concept of how big babies are. I need these age numbers! I cross-referenced with another pattern and made the 46cm size.

I like to make a little hat and sweater set for babies so I went off with the aim of finding a cute bonnet pattern. I found this one, The Sumac Bonnet by Weaving Wonder.

The edging of the bonnet is originally done in garter stitch but I wanted ribbing to match the sweater. If I did it with the same amount of stitches there would have been one extra knit stitch that blended into the stockinette on one side so I cast on one extra stitch and did a K2tog in the middle on my first row of stockinette. This worked perfectly and unless you knit and you’re really looking for it’s completely invisible. I don’t know why the pattern didn’t include the end of the back of the hat garter/my rib section. This could just be something I missed but it looks fine.

Also, be aware that this pattern is only in the imperial system. Not a huge deal but having to google conversions into centimeters is a little annoying.

I absolutely love how these two look together! It’s such a sweet little set that I really enjoyed making.

When someone has a second baby I like to also include a little something for the older sibling. I had some white of the same yarn and found this Karina Turban Hat pattern.

I love this pattern. It knit up super quick, was super clear, and it’s just darn cute. I think I’ll end up making this one again and again.

I can’t wait to get this set in the mail because everything turned out so well. I always want patterns to be this easy even if it makes finding things to say about them super hard!
