The Quest for Carnivorous Plants- Buzzy Basin Anthracite Venus Fly Trap Review
I am so happy to be living in Malta, but I am also beyond terrified because I am not a fan of the insect. I understand they have so much value to the world… but I would prefer if they add that value far away from me. I think the easiest and best way to manage them is just have a bunch of carnivorous plants everywhere. I’ve had venus fly traps in the past, but I’ve never grown them from seed. I was beyond happy to find this cute kit.
March 7th - Let’s see what we’re working with…
I have pretty high expectations of plant kits. I expect when I buy a kit it will include everything so I can just pop it in and go and unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. The instructions on this are quite good. It is very clear that this is a tropical plant and requires a certain level of care. I also loved the explanation on how the plant works and why you shouldn’t just close the mouths willy-nilly.
The first step is to put small rocks or clay balls on the bottom and cover it with the included soil. This is where I had the most massive eye roll ever. I understand how important drainage is for a plant… so why would they not include the materials in the kit? Can you even call it a kit if a key component is missing? If I had known I would have bought some, but I guess I’ll have to go on a pebble hunt before I can plant my traps. I looked up a lot of suppliers of the kit and tried to find reviews because I was worried this might happen, but here we are.
Another mild thing is that apparently I will need to transplant these eventually. I’ve grown a venus fly trap successfully in a smaller container, so I’m sure I’ll be able to keep at least one plant in the basin that they supplied, but a part of me always feels like why not give a basin that’s big enough for all the plants included? To be fair, my plan is to have a venus fly trap on every surface of my flat in the summer so I’m not mad at it, but I wish I had maybe bought more pots sooner.
Also, it must be noted that to a dog this soil is apparently the best thing ever to smell. Maisy is absolutely enthralled by it and it’s very cute.
