My Mom always talks about a pair of royal blue sailor pants she had in the ’70s. When I saw the Rebecca Page Berry Bubble Shorts Add On*, I knew what they needed to be.

I was honestly so excited about these. I had visions of myself being cute and comfy in kind of 1930’s style pyjama’s lounging on a beach and living my best resort life.

How naive we all were at the beginning of the year.

But, let’s get into the pattern.

These are a sailor type, unlined pant that’s an add on to Berry Bubble Shorts- you’ll need both patterns.

They come in doll and children’s sizes and women’s size XXS-5XL. In Rebecca Page, my bust measures a 4XL, my waist a 3XL, and my hips a 5XL. Since the size grading on these pants is right at the crotch seam and over a short area, I thought grading to a 4XL at the waist would be fine.

It was not.

The pattern itself is very typical of Rebecca Page. Well written, lots of hand-holding, photos at each step of the process, and an emphasis on good finishing and making a good quality beautiful garment.

I’m proud of these as a testament to my sewing skills.

Also, it must be noted that these are damn comfy. Like, almost on par with sweatpants comfy.

I’ve seen these pants look amazing on a lot of people, but in the end, I just don’t think they’re for me.

I definitely think there are issues of skill on my end. Pants are hard to fit and I’m not at a point in my sewing journey where I could fit them to my waist and have it look good. I’m determined to make this again when I’m more skilled and see.

A part of me also wonders if it’s a simple issue of the pleated fronts and the super wide legs not being ideal for my body type. Is it a thing of me being used to myself in skinny jeans so I feel like I look weird in a more roomy pant, even though maybe I look sort of fine? Maybe? Thoughts?

Despite my fit issues, I’d recommend this pattern. If you fit more neatly into the Rebecca Page size chart and didn’t need to grade or only had to grade one size this is a great sew. I had fun making it, and I like the pants, but for me, they just aren’t right… yet.
